A boss trigger is the bait, quest item or creature that starts a boss encounter. It is consumed or placed only when you are ready to fight.

Guides for when the fish starts shooting back
Start with the thing that stopped your run. Search 57 documented fish and creatures, match 17 verified lure and bait items, follow the 5-stage story route, prepare for 11 documented boss encounters, or track all 31 Steam achievements. Official achievements and patch notes are current for Patch 1.1.3; the new mini-boss and mini-island route still need independent confirmation.
The best guide is the one you can close before a seagull steals the evidence.

What stopped your run?
Skip the 4,000-word history of fishing. You need the right item, the next hand-in or the button your friend cannot find.
I need the right catch
Search every fish and creature by island, rod, lure or boss status. Much faster than interrogating the ocean.
Open Fish FinderI have the fish, but not the bait
Start with the item in your inventory and see its full catch pool, including quest bait and boss triggers.
Match a lureThe next island is ignoring me
Follow each NPC request, boss trigger, trophy hand-in and route unlock in story order.
Find the next stepThe boss has opinions
Check the exact bait or quest item that starts each fight, plus the odd-looking drop you should keep afterward.
Prepare for a bossMy friend cannot join
Choose the right lobby type, copy the Lobby ID and work through black screens, relay errors and timeouts.

Track achievementsThe useful bit
The game has one joke, and it keeps telling it
How to Fish teaches you to sell your catch. Then it gives you a strange trophy, a fish body or a carrot and quietly makes that object the key to the next island. Efficient players are especially vulnerable. We see revenue. The game sees a quest flag wearing fins.
Story progress follows a five-part rhythm. Finish the local NPC request, prepare the boss trigger, win the fight, keep the unusual drop and return it to the NPC. A larger gun cannot replace a missing Modified Leech. It can only make you look well equipped while standing on the wrong island.
Before you sell, cook, gamble or donate an odd item to a seagull, check whether an NPC just asked for it. That habit prevents the backtracking caused by discarded quest items.
Follow the complete island route
A progression hand-in is the unique trophy or body returned to an NPC after a boss. The next route opens only after the hand-in; killing the boss leaves you one step short.
A Drip creature is a rare variant with a rainbow name. Killing one records it; completing every Drip entry unlocks Fishipedia.
Steam global achievement rates
Players do not quit at the first fish
Steam shows 98.6% of players getting their first kill, while 45.8% have finished the story. The sharper drop arrives during later island progression and completion goals, which is where a guide can save more than a minute.
96.5% have killed at least one Drip creature. Only 3.6% have completed Fishipedia. Finding one is an accident. Finding all of them is a project.

Patch 1.1.3What changed lately
Patch 1.1.3 turns Fishipedia into a bait hint
- Fishipedia now shows the bait for a fish after your first kill. That makes repeat catches and Drip hunting less dependent on outside notes.
- Patch 1.1.2 increased the new bait spawn from two to three and fixed Tench not spawning from it.
- Mini-island radar dots are larger. Wishbone upgrade prices were adjusted, the new mini-boss marker was fixed, and reload rebinding plus two bow skins were added.
The 31-achievement list and the eight-fish Crab Carcass pool are current. The new mini-boss encounter and mini-island route remain pending until two current independent sources agree.

Search the creature in Fish Finder to see its rod and bait, or open Lure Lookup when you already have a lure and want to see everything it can catch.
