Steam multiplayer guide

How to Fish multiplayer lobby guide

Trying to play with a friend? Use a Steam invite for a private game, or make the lobby Public and share its Lobby ID.

Looking for the Session ID? The game calls it a Lobby ID. The host uses Copy Lobby ID, and the other player joins with Search by ID.

Choose the right route

Invite a friend or share an ID.

Want a private game? Use Invite Only and send a Steam invite. Joining with an ID? Set the session to Public and share the Lobby ID only with the people you want to join.

01 · Invite Only

Invite a Steam friend

Private lobbies are invite-only. Choose this route when everyone is already on your Steam friends list. The host needs to be inside the world before sending the invite.

  1. Choose Invite Only in Server Settings.
  2. Load into the world.
  3. Choose Invite Friend.
  4. Your friend accepts the Steam invite and joins.

Changed the session type? Restart the session before trying again.

02 · Public + ID

Join by Lobby ID

  1. Set the session to Public and load into the world.
  2. Choose Copy Lobby ID and send the code to your friend.
  3. Your friend opens Join Multiplayer and enters the code.
  4. They choose Search by ID.

Can’t find one of these buttons? A later game update may have changed the menu label.

Prefer the Steam friends list?

Public and Invite Only sessions both support Steam invites or the in-game Find Steam Friends option. Wait until the host is inside the world before sending or accepting the invite.

Black screen, lobby not found or timeout

Still can’t join? Try these in order.

Start with the quick resets below. Stop when both players can see and join the same lobby.

  1. 1
Make sure both players have the same game version.

Update the game on both PCs before testing the lobby again.

  2. 2
Restart How to Fish and Steam.

Close the game completely, restart the Steam client, then reopen the game.

  3. 3
Check Steam Relay on the main menu.

If the relay status is red, use the game’s Discord link to open its common-bugs guide.

  4. 4
    Create a fresh lobby.

Have the host load into the new world, then send a new invite or Lobby ID.

Is Find Steam Friends empty? Some players say the Steam Overlay setting affected this menu for them. This workaround comes from player reports and may not help every setup.

Keep your save files and avoid third-party connection tools. None of these steps requires either.
